When you line up for any kind of race in Bend, Ore., there’s a good chance you’ll find an Olympian or ex-Olympian lining up nearby. That place is loaded with champions. Even the fans appear to be in better shape than the runners or cyclists who are doing the racing. So I wasn’t surprised to find a huge field at the kids’ race when I brought my boys to the Crossaflixion race over the weekend. Start ’em young.
I didn’t have time to pursue a full pdxcross.com style assault on the Bend scene, just time enough for the boys to rally a little bit before the drive back to Portland. But good things are happening in Bend and we’ll be back again in December for the Cyclocross National Championships where you’re guaranteed to be lining up near a real-life champion.
