The Tape

I met this very nice photographer at the 2010 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships. We greeted each other, smiled about the fact that we’re both named Tim. He told me he shoots a lot of surfing and that sounded quite nice given that the temperature was hovering in the low 30s and it was starting to rain. He then added that he’d met a guy down in California this past cyclocross season who would find a special corner and stick it out and photograph while it rained.

Really, I thought. When does it – not – rain during cyclocross season?

And then the bonus. This guy he was talking about, never even gets the tape that marks the course in his images. He’s that good.

Really, I thought. Game on. I’m going to see if I can get tape in all my pictures as I stand out here in the pouring rain and snow. I love it. I love the weather as it changes every ten minutes. I love the tape that’s always in my way. I love the racers coming at me at a hundred miles an hour. I love Shimano for stretching their name across every inch of the playing field. I’m not even going to try to avoid it.
