April 5, 2012. River View Natural Area
It felt like I was trespassing. I had that uneasy feeling I was going to come upon a camp full of people who didn’t want me there.
And while I saw a few bags of trash and cans, in the end, I saw no one during the hour I explored the 146-acre River View Natural Area.
I ran along the trails, the mud still slick as oil from all the spring rain. I had no map, no history with this place.
There’s a busy road at the bottom of the hill, a college and neighborhood full of homes at the top. But I was alone that afternoon, except for the thrushes, surrounded by dying ivy. The place felt so very strange.
