These Stairs Only Go Up

I go to these buttes, these crests, these ancient volcanos because I know when I get to the top, there will be a view. It is rewarding. My decision to go one place or another is usually based on the weather, not on how I feel or how far I want to go. Pouring rain? The forest it is, where it seems only half of the drops make it through the canopy. Clear skies? You’ll find me on top of a big hill, staring at the mountains in the distance, thinking about summer runs and hikes and canoe trips.
